Gorham Narragansett Sterling Napkin Ring

A footed napkin ring by the Gorham company in the Narragansett pattern, circa 1880. There is a lightly engraved presentation on the top of the ring dated 1889. There are multiple applications of seaweed and shells on the ring and on the base of the ring to form the feet. Weight 3.85 troy ounces. Height 2"

For a collector or beginner to appreciate how these items were manufactured and the high degree of craftsmanship required at Gorham, one should visit a silversmith and witness the skill involved in working with the metal. Silver melts at a very high temperature. The heat and solder have to be controlled perfectly to achieve the desired results. Today's silversmiths marvel at the achievements of the Victorian era and for good reason.
